what is top-rack dishwasher safe?

Why is the top rack so damn special? And more important, what is so wrong with the bottom rack? Is it only the slow dishes that get the bottom rack? It's rackist!

Personally, if the damn thing can go in the dishwasher, what should it matter where in it it goes?I don't want to have to remember washing instructions for dishes and if there are going to be instructions, they should be required to have tags like clothes. A crib sheet if you will. Then you won't ever be afraid of shrinking that pyrex dish by accidentally putting it in the lower rack.
